The mill is located in Pisgah Forest and occupies part j of the site formerly used by the Carr Lumber company. About 40 men are now on the Alexander payroll. Charles L. Guyer, vice president and treasurer of the veneer company, said yesterday the mill is in the market for red oak, poplar and walnut. “We buy red (Pisa oak in 42 and 84 inch lengths,” he said, “and poplar in blocks 60, 64. 72 and 78 inches long.” Avery Poor is the checker at the mill’s unloading yard, and is on duty there every day. The Saturday hours are 7:00 to 12 noon. Mr. Guyer has estimated that about $200,000 will be spent annually by his company for logs, and the annual pay roll will be between $180,000 and $140,000. After unseasonably low tem peratures, warmer weather is here bringing with it budding trees and flowering shrubs, as noted in the above 'photo made in beautiful Pis gah National Forest. Watershed ^Survey Begins “Advanced planning on the French Broad Watershed will start on May 7th,” Edward Mack ey, chairman of the Transyl vania Soil Conservation district stated. Mr. Mackey continued, “R. M. Dailey, state conservationist for the Soil Conservation service has informed the district that the surveying crew of the plan ning party will arrive in Brevard on May 6th and will start en gineering survey work on May 7th. The remaining members of the party will arrive at a some what later date.” “Initially, the surveying crew will be running surveys across the .valley and the river. From these surveys it will be possible to determine the amount of land that is flooded by certain storms. Charles Himes, chairman of the banquet and entertainment committee, an nounces today. The auspicious event will be held on Friday night, May 4th, her° in the Masonic temple. Members of the commerce body are requested to return their checks for the tickets as soon as possible in order that the proper number of meals may be ordered. Additional tickets may be se cured from Mrs. John A. Ford, the executive secretary, in the Chamber of Commerce office at the library. The public is cordially invited to attend the banquet. Dr. W. D. Weatherford, an eminent educator and author, will be the principal speaker. Wednesday was the seventh straight Class five fire day in Transylvania county and the threat of forest fires continues. According to Sanger Ted Seely, the county has been for tunate during the past week as compared to other wooded counties in North Carolina. Only one fire has been report ed, and it was in the Cantrell Creek area. However, the burned over j area was controlled within two acres. Ranger Seely and State Rang er Clark Grissom remind the public that all burning per mits have been cancelled, and no burning of brush or trash will be permitted until after a good rain. Next Term Of Genera! Court Set May 7th The next term of the new General County court in Tran sylvania is set for Monday, May 7th. According to Solicitor Bruce Morton, there are already some 100 cases on the docket. All defendants, witnesses and others involved in the vari ous cases are reminded to be in the court room on the 7th. f— -► j The Weather ! By - A1 Martin Brevard’s Official Weatherman Although spring may be here on the calendar, early morning temperature readings in the Syl van Valley belie the fact. Read ings during the past seven day period averaged just under 32 degrees with afternoon tempera tures averaging 73 degrees. No precipitation whatsoever was recorded for the week. Ex tremes occurred when the mer cury fell to 22 degrees on Sat urday morning and soared to 80 degrees on Monday afternoon. Russell, coun ty chairman, announces today. At the same time Democrats across North Carolina will hold precinct meetings as the first step in organizing the party for action in the 1962 General Elec tions, Mr. Russell states. Mr. Russell urges all Tran sylvania Democrats to attend the precinct meetings. At the meetings on May 5th, the Democrats residing in each precinct elect a five-member committee, at least two of whom will be men, and at least two will be women. The precinct committees, after their election, — Turn to Page Four Belk's Annual Founder's Day Sale Underway Belk’s annual Founders Day sale will be held from April 26th through May 5th, Jim Smith, manager of the Brevard depart ment store, announces today. Mr. Smith says that the late W. H. Belk, founder of Belk’s, was truly a pioneer in establishing present-day merchandising meth ods in the South. Just 71 years ago he put into practice policies * which today are widely accept ed and praised, but which at the time were considered radical and rash. The son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Ashworth, of 20 Carolina avenue, Brevard, Donald will major in chemical engineer ing at North Carolina State college, and plans a career as an engineer. His hobbies include hunting and fishing, and he teaches Sunday school at the First Baptist church. As many as 30 teams are ex pected to be entered in the com petition which will be limited to boys’ competition only. Ap proximately 500 boys will par ticipate, according to advance expectations. Program Director Bill Hancock reminds listeners of WPNF’s early evening news round - up, Five Star Final, heard from 6:00 —Turn to Page Eight Jaycettes Are Making Plans For Miss Brevard Pageant i, .. 1“ -J ks I' --- The Miss Brevard beauty page ant will be sponsored again this year by the Brevard Jaycettes in connection with the Sylvan Val ley Folk Festival in July. Plans for the event were com pleted at the Jaycette meeting last week and are announced by Mrs. Barbara Smart, chairman. Mrs. Margaret Garren is assist ant chairman. Contestants will be judged on their beauty and talent, and they will appear in bathing suits and evening gowns. The winner will represent Brevard in the 1963 state beauty pageant. The two runners - up will receive plaques, and Miss Congeniality will be selected by the contestants themselves. Applications are now being taken, and any single girl be tween the ages of 17 and 25 who presents a talent is eligible to enter the contest. Those interested should con tact Mrs. Smart at 883-5780. Registrars And Judges Listed By Chairman Registration for the Primary election on May 26th will begin on Saturday, April 28th Raiffe W. Lyday, chairman of the board of Elections, announces today.
